What dog isn't a hero? (in his own mind)

Mar 22nd, 2009

Bolt is the story of a dog who thinks he is a super hero, what dog doesn't, huh? Lil Kit and I watched Bolt on DVD this weekend and frankly, Mittens, the stray cat stole the show imho. It's made by Disney and features the same artistic style that they used in the incredibles, a very funny movie, if you can relate to having been a super hero in your youth who has put on a few pounds and some responsibility.

In both stories, the protagonist believes himself to be invincible only to discover flaws that make him less so and, you guess it, finally re-emerge victorious over both external and internal villains. The difference is that in the incredibles, the human, Mr. Incredible, and his family, for that matter, are real super heroes with all the powers and implied responsibilities such a role engenders. In Bolt, the dog for which the movie is named, is merely, [ed: author pauses a moment in thought] human.

Bolt is a sheltered puppy who is encouraged to believe he is superhuman by the producer of a television show so that the show will have an air of realism. When he discovers the true nature of his situation, he runs away, a tried and true method of self-discovery that I frankly considered as an alternative to writing this review.

After a series of trials and tribulations, bolt comes to believe that "his human", loves him and he needs her as well, so he works to find his way home, in his case a television studio lot to rejoin her and find happiness.

"Nurture your mind with great thoughts;
to believe in the heroic makes heroes"
    Benjamin Disraeli,
(British Prime Minister and Novelist. 1804-1881)

Every cake has to have some frosting. Three guesses what flavor this cake has when bolt's human finds herself in dire circumstances just as Bolt arrives home. LilKit and I both highly recommend seeing Bolt if you haven't already. Even if it is about a dog, it is still a great time for tabby's of all ages. So what did I learn from this movie? Apparently Hollywood beleives that dogs have humans too, not just tabbys!
